Charge

The Task Force on the Relationship of the TEI Header and the Cataloging Rules is charged with, but not limited to:

  1. Investigating ways CC:DA and the editors of the TEI might collaborate to inform each other on the implementation and development of header data elements;
  2. Consider amending AACR2 to instruct catalogers in the use of TEI headers as title page substitutes;
  3. Investigating possible collaboration with MARBI and other organizations to standardize encoding conventions in support of reversible mapping between MARC and SGML, or to support seamless integration of TEI-conforment headers into MARC databases. (CC:DA would be concerned with the appropriate definition of data content, not data encoding);
  4. Investigating the proposed Dublin Metadata Core Element Set and evaluating its use as a source of information for cataloging.

The Task Force should refer to the document CC:DA Position Paper 4 for background information as well as further guidance in their examination of this question.

The Task Force should plan to present CC:DA with interim reports at the 1996 ALA Annual Conference and the 1997 ALA Midwinter Meeting. The final report of the Task Force should be presented to CC:DA no later than Dec. 15, 1997.
