Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access

Paul Weiss
ALA Representative to NISO

Mr. Weiss,

CC:DA has approved the statement below from its Task Force on the Review of ANSI/NISO Draft Standard Z39.85, The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set, and adopted it as the official position of CC:DA.

Adam L. Schiff
Chair, ALCTS/CCS/CC:DA

The CC:DA Task Force on the Review of ANSI/NISO Draft Standard Z39.85, The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set has reviewed all of the the NLM and SLA comments and the responses from NISO Standards Committee AS.

The Task Force reaffirms its support of a “Yes” vote by the ALA NISO voting member, and recommends that he not change his vote during the reconsideration ballot period.

While we were in sympathy with some of the concerns expressed by NLM and SLA (and indeed had expressed some of these same concerns amongst ourselves during our original discussions last summer), we did not find the negative comments of the “No” voters persuasive enough to recommend that the ALA voting member change his “Yes” vote. We also believe that the Standards Committee AS’s responses have adequately addressed the NLM and SLA concerns and given satisfactory justification for the way the draft standard is written.

If it will help the Committee in its discussions on whether to accept and forward our recommendation to Mr. Weiss, I will be happy to elaborate further on the Task Force's position on any of the specific NLM or SLA concerns.

Sincerely,
Michael A. Chopey
Chair, CC:DA Task Force on the Review of ANSI/NISO Draft Standard Z39.85,
The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set
