Charge

The Task Force on Consistency across Part I of AACR2 is charged to undertake an editorial review of Part I. Specifically, using the Alpha Prototype of a Reorganized Part I of AACR and “The Logical Structure of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules,” Part I, as prepared by Tom Delsey, as well as the text of Part I of AACR2,

  1. identify inconsistencies of wording across chapters and prepare revisions to resolve the inconsistencies;
  2. determine how many specific rules exist for particular classes of content or carrier or publication pattern; decide whether any of these specific rules should be given in general form in Chapter 1 and prepare revisions in such cases; note which rules should not be generalized and give a brief rationale for this decision.

Revision proposals should be submitted as parts of the project are completed; it is suggested that all proposals for a particular ISBD area of the description be submitted together.

The Task Force will submit progress reports at each CC:DA Annual and Midwinter Meeting beginning with Annual 2002, and will continue to work until the project has been completed. Proposals shall be submitted to the Chair of CC:DA prior to the CC:DA meeting according to the schedule outlined in the CC:DA Procedures.

List of Task Force Documents

The Task Force will be taking up the analysis of the rules in Part I according to the ISBD areas of the description. For each area, we expect to submit three documents:

  1. The text of the relevant rules in chapters 1-12, rearranged to bring together comparable rules. The rules have been color coded using different background colors for each chapter, in order to assist in determining the source of seach rule. These documents will be distributed in Microsoft Word format only.
  2. An analysis of the rules, which will include (a) an outline of the rules in the area; (b) the unique rules in Chapter 1; (c) the unique rules in Chapters 2-12; and (d) inconsistencies across chapters. This is typically a preliminary document, compiled before any decisions have been made as to what revisions to propose. These documents will be distributed in both Word “[DOC]” and Acrobat “[PDF]” versions.
  3. Rule revision proposals. This document will also include the outline of the rules, an executive summary of any difficult or unresolved issues, a summary of the analysis of unique and inconsistent rules, a discussion of any proposals that go beyond simple editorial consistency, and a list of any actions that are deferred for later attention or are referred to other groups. These documents will be distributed in both Word “[DOC]” and Acrobat “[PDF]” versions.
