Attached is an agenda for the meeting of the new ALCTS Task Force to Define Bibliographic Access in the Electronic Environment chaired by Jennifer Younger. Jennifer has kindly agreed to attend our Sat. meeting and discuss directions and strategies for this new Group.
For your information -- the agendas may change some as the TF members review, etc., but in the meantime, here it is. If you know of other committee chairs, etc. who would like to see this agenda, please feel free either to forward on (I would appreciate a copy just for my information) or send a request to me.

Activities Identified in the Charge to the Task Force
- Perform a survey of existing electronic document cataloging activities nationally and internationally to forge alliances, identify work in progress and determine areas of need.
- Consult with librarians engaged in collection management and reference services to determine current user awareness of digital resources and user needs.
- Determine the role of data in the MARC format in providing intellectual access to electronic documents and whether other non-traditional approaches might play a role.
- Investigate the manner in which SGML should be mapped to MARC and vice versa, considering current work in progress, e.g., at LC.
- Review and recommend standards or system capabilities to provide locator information that is transportable and automatically updatable in bibliographic records.
- Recommend acceptable substitutes to traditional methods of cataloging.
- Communicate with other groups working on issues of providing access to information in digital form.
