Definition of Subfield $z (Numbering Scheme) in Fields 853-855 (Captions and Patterns) of the MARC 21 Holdings Format
Source: Library of Congress, CONSER Publication Pattern Task Force Summary: Proposes the adoption of a new subfield in fields 853-855 of the holdings format to assist in characterizing the attributes of enumeration levels. Coded values will indicate whether the numbering scheme is expressed Arabic numerals, Roman numerals, or Alphabetics. MARBI Action Taken: Option 2 (a 2-3 character code) affirmed as right direction; to be continued at ALA Annual in Chicago. |

Fields include: 505 (Formatted Contents Note); 514 (Data Quality Note); 520 (Summary, Etc.); 530 (Additional Physical Form Available Note); 545 (Biographical or Historical Data); 552 (Entity and Attribute Information Note); and 773 (Host Item Entry) MARBI Action Taken: Approved definition of $u in all 5XX fields but not in the 773 field; LC was asked to identify a place in the 514 and 552 fields for adding caption information. The other 5XX fields have a either a print constant, general text or caption subfield that can be used to indicate why a user might want to follow the URI provided. |

Renaming of Subfield $u to Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) in Field 856 in MARC 21 Formats
