  1. International Conference on the Principles and Future Development of AACR

    • The Conference proceeded as planned, with only one notable change: due to Michael Gorman’s having missed his connecting flight to Toronto, his arrival was delayed. Consequently, Tom Delsey spoke first, with Michael, instead, opening the Conference’s second day.

    • After the speakers’ presentations and reaction to/discussion of the presentations, 9 general sets of issues were identified to serve as the focus of the break-out group discussion during the Conference’s third and final day. These were:

      • Principles
      • Remainder of Introduction
      • Case-Based Rules
      • Terminology
      • Seriality
      • Main Entry/Work Authority Record
      • Content vs. Carrier
      • Internationalization of AACR2
      • AACR Review Process.

    • The break-out groups, in turn, made a number of recommendations to JSC for either AACR2 revision or other action.

    • At its meeting following the Conference, the JSC considered the various recommendations and decided to proceed as follows:

      1. Seriality: JSC wishes to pursue formalizing recommendations as rule revision proposals. Inasmuch as CONSER took the lead in preparing and delivering the Conference paper on seriality, the JSC agreed that CONSER should likewise take the lead in preparing proposals for submission to JSC via CC:DA. The CONSER AACR Review Task Force, chaired by Sara Shatford Layne, will coordinate development of the proposals, working with others in the U.S. and international serials communities as appropriate, including the ALCTS/CCS/Committee to Study Serials Cataloging.

      2. Principles: JSC wishes to pursue completion of the entity-relationship modeling exercise begun by Tom Delsey in order to identify principles currently embodied in AACR2. JSC will also devise list of what we think those principles are.

      3. Content vs. Carrier: JSC wishes to solicit a 0.24 revision proposal in order to advance the discussion. Inasmuch as CC:DA has undertaken a number of rule revision proposal initiatives in the past that have run afoul of 0.24 (e.g., multiple versions, “edition”), JSC requests that CC:DA take the lead in preparing a proposal to revise 0.24 so that the JSC actually has a proposal to consider.

      4. Main Entry/Work Authority Record: JSC will await the results of the entity-relationship modeling exercise described in (2) before proceeding.

      5. Case-Based Rules: JSC will also await the results of the entity-relationship modeling exercise described in (2) before proceeding. In the meantime, JSC will try to develop a policy/procedure in re: where the “line” is beyond which a proposed rule revision proposal is too specialized and, therefore, better included in a specialist cataloging manual.

      6. Internationalization: JSC will confirm whether surveys have been conducted of non-author country use/interest and, if none have, conduct one itself. Language will be added to AACR website apropos of proposals from non-author countries coming through appropriate national cataloging channels to the Chair of JSC.

      7. Review Process: JSC will formulate a mission statement and goals/objectives, in consultation with the Committee of Principals, to be included on the AACR website.

      8. Remainder of Introduction: JSC will defer proposing revisions to (or entertaining proposals for revision to) the Introduction until the review of principles described in (2) is complete.

      9. Terminology: JSC will await the results of the entity-relationship modeling exercise described in (2) above and the rule revision proposal for 0.24 described in (3) above before pursuing additional proposals in re: terminology.

    • One of the interesting/useful by-products of the Toronto Conference is the JSC’s having received a substantial number of comments in re: AACR2 from the Conference of Directors of National Libraries. Ralph Manning will convert responses received into Chair document revision proposals as appropriate.

  2. AACR2e

    • JSC has now received both FolioViews and the AACR2e files.

    • Responsibility for review of chapters/sections has been divided up amongst the JSC membership, with each of us responsible for ca. 5 chapters/sections.

    • Ralph Manning has requested at least preliminary input from us by the end of January, so that he can report to the Committee of Principals at their meeting in February.
