RE: Summary of 1997 ALA Annual Decisions [on JSC Documents]

Since we covered as much ground as we did at ALA Annual in San Francisco, and were awaiting CSSC input thereafter, I thought you all might find useful a summary of where we are with the various documents for which ALA responses are pending.

Below, I have grouped documents into two categories: 1) those on which CC:DA made final decisions at Annual and 2) those on which CC:DA was awaiting CSSC [ALCTS Serials Section Committee to Study Serials Cataloging] input. For each document within those categories, I have indicated the CC:DA decision, the CSSC decision (where appropriate), and, finally, what I therefore think the appropriate ALA action is. If you disagree with what I propose as ALA action, please let me know no later than October 17.

Final Decisions Made

  1. CC:DA/Glossary/1/rev.

    • CC:DA approved with minor typo corrections. Adam Schiff has sent me the following additions in re: "CD-R (CD-Recordable)" which I shall incorporate into the document, of which Laurel has (re)sent me an electronic version:

      Section C - Add:
CD-R. (Compact Disc-Recordable). See Computer optical disc.
Recordable CD. See Computer optical disc.

      Section E.1 - Add:
      CD-R., see Computer optical disc
Recordable CD, see Computer optical disc

    • ALA action: Send forward as 3JSC/ALA/25/ALA follow-up.

  2. CC:DA/GMD/1/rev.

    • CC:DA approved. Laurel to (re)send me an electronic version of the document.

    • ALA action: Send forward as 3JSC/ALA/27.

  3. CC:DA/Jizba/1

    • CC:DA rejected. Will be incorporated into new rule revision proposals to be prepared by the CC:DA TF on ISBD(ER) Harmonization.

    • ALA action: None.

  4. 3JSC/LC/25

    • CC:DA approved, as amended by CCC.

    • ALA action: Endorse the CCC amendment.

  5. 3JSC/LC/26

    • CC:DA approved, as amended by CCC.

    • ALA action: Endorse the CCC amendment.

  6. 3JSC/LC/27

    • CC:DA approved, as amended by CCC, with the addition of the following example:

Unfortunately, the examples provided me by Mitch Turitz are illustrative of the corporate body name portion of the rule, not the "other words or phrases" portion. I'd appreciate another example illustrating that aspect.

    • ALA action: Endorse the CCC amendment and recommend addition of the example above.

  7. 3JSC/LC/28

    • CC:DA approved, as amended by CCC.

    • ALA action: Endorse the CCC amendment. (To be forwarded as 3JSC/LC/28/ALA response/2 as we had already responded to 3JSC/LC/28.)

  8. 3JSC/LC/29

    • CC:DA approved Glenn Pat ton’s revision of the proposed Appendix for initial articles.

    • ALA action: Forward the Patton document as 3JSC/LC/29/ALA response/2 as we had already responded to 3JSC/LC/29.

  9. 3JSC/LC/38

    • CC:DA approved. (NOTE: MLA supports as well.)

    • ALA action: Endorse the LC proposal.

  10. 3JSC/Rule Revision/2/Consolidated/4

    • CC:DA approved.

    • ALA action: Endorse the document.

Tentative Decisions Made, Pending Input (and since received) from the Committee to Study Serials Cataloging (CSSC)

  1. 3JSC/LC/30

    • CC:DA approved, with preference for Option B.

    • CSSC also approved, but with preference for Option A.

    • ALA action: Further discussion needed. CC:DA needs to decide, with CSSC input now in-hand, whether it prefers Text A or Text B. (See /LC/40.)

  2. 3JSC/LC/31

    • CC:DA agrees with the need for the language in the rule proposal, but suggests that the heading of the proposed text be changed. [To what?]

    • First paragraph: CSSC agrees with CCC here: this should not be a subrule, but rather appear in the glossary or at the highest level of 1.6. Second paragraph: CSSC wishes to include the second proposed paragraph and example as a separate rule, perhaps 1.6K.

    • ALA action: Further discussion needed. See Martha Yee's email that follows.

  3. 3JSC/LC/32

    • CC:DA supports the LC language, as modified by the CCC parenthetical, with the addition of an example using an alpha. designation. (To be supplied me by whom?)

    • CSSC agrees with CCC about emphasis but generally prefers LC's wording. To accommodate both, CSSC proposes a slight wording change, the addition of the word "grammatically":

"If the title proper of the series includes numbering that is grammatically integral, transcribe the numbering as part of the title proper."

Inclusion of an alpha-numeric example might also be helpful.

    • ALA action: further discussion needed.

  4. 3JSC/LC/33

    • CC:DA does not support the proposal as written and suggests rewording as follows:

1.6C1. After the title proper of the series has been recorded, follow the instructions in 1.1D (second level of description) when transcribing the parallel title of the series.

    • CSSC is split on this one. A small majority agree with the [CC:DA proposed] revision; the minority agree with CCC that referral to 1.1D is appropriate and in keeping with the structure of AACR2.

    • ALA action: Forward recommendation for rewording.

  5. 3JSC/LC/34

    • CC:DA supports the modified language contained in the CCC response, with the third paragraph further modified as follows:

If the numbering that appears on the item is known to be incorrect, transcribe it as found and add the correct numbering in square brackets.

      Kieler historische Studien ; Bd. 24 [i.e. 25]

    • Third paragraph: CSSC prefers CCC's wording, "If the numbering that appears on the item is known to be incorrect ... ," with the CC:DA change re square brackets. Fourth paragraph: AACR2 and RIs use the words "give," "record," and "transcribe" at different points; this is not a problem (at least for the English-language text of AACR2; we did not discuss the implications for the French-language version).

    • ALA action: Endorse the modified language contained in the CCC response, with recommendation for additional modification.

  6. 3JSC/LC/35

    • CC:DA supports and agrees with the CCC in re: deletion/revision of index entries.

    • CSSC prefers LC wording but agrees with CCC that there should be index changes. CSSC does not believe that CCC's proposed change from the word "record" to "give" is necessary, since AACR2 uses "transcribe," "record," "give," etc., in different sections.

    • ALA action: Endorse the LC proposal, noting agreement with CCC's observation that index entries will need to be deleted or revised and disagreement that "record" should be changed to "give."

  7. 3JSC/LC/36

    • CC:DA supports, as modified by CCC, with the addition of examples to 1.6H3 as follows (supplied to me by John Attig; Adam Schiff sent some along too—thanks Adam!).

Marian Library studies ; new ser., v. 12

Cambridge studies in international and comparative law. New series

    • CSSC agrees with CCC's revision here.

    • ALA action: Endorse the modified language contained in the CCC response, with recommendation that example be added. BUT, see John Attig's email that follows.

  8. 3JSC/LC/37

    • CC:DA supports the substance of the LC proposal but isn't sure about the CCC's proposal in re: 1.6J3. Need to consider side-by-side with 3JSC/LC/31. Will await input from CSSC.

    • CSSC agrees with CCC: include the second paragraph as a new subrule, 1.6J2.

CSSC wishes to separate out "Not all parts in a series," however, and put it in a separate rule, perhaps 1.6K.

The addition of "etc." to 1.6J is not satisfactory to direct those who have a situation where not all parts of a set are in a series. CSSC believes that it is better to create a new rule for that case, rather than to do the alternative, expanding 1.6J to cover both cases.

    • ALA action: further discussion needed. See Martha Yee's email that follows.

  9. 3JSC/LC/39

    • CC:DA rejected.

    • CSSC is split on this one, but a majority agree with CCC and the CC:DA straw poll: the rule should retain the basic premise that series can be taken from the "whole publication."

    • ALA action: Do NOT endorse the LC proposal.

  10. 3JSC/LC/40

    • CC:DA approved, with preference for Option B.

    • The majority of CSSC prefers Text A; a minority prefers Text B.

    • ALA action: Further discussion needed. CC:DA needs to decide, with CSSC input now in-hand, whether it prefers Text A or Text B. (See /LC/30.)

  11. 3JSC/LC/41

    • CC:DA approved.

    • CSSC supports LC's proposed revision.

    • ALA action: Endorse the LC proposal.

  12. 3JSC/LC/42

    • CC:DA supports the modified language contained in the CCC response, further modified as follows:

Numbering. The identification of each of the successive items of a serial, series, or multi-part monograph.

    • CSSC supports CC:DA's amended version of the CCC version (i.e. with the addition of "multi-part monograph").

    • ALA action: Endorse the modified language contained in the CCC response, with recommendation for further modification. BUT, see Martha Yee's email that follows.

  13. 3JSC/LC/43

    • CC:DA rejected by straw poll, pending CSSC input.

    • CSSC suggests addition of the word "indefinitely" to the definition, to distinguish series from multi-part item more clearly.

    • ALA action: Further discussion needed.
    • 3JSC/LC/44

      • CC:DA approved.

      • Only a few CSSC members responded to this. Those who did agreed with CCC's rejection of LC's proposed revision.

      • ALA action: Further discussion needed.
