Memos on Corrections to AACR2

Please note that the purpose of this page is to facilitate the work of the Committee and to provide a means for outreach to both library and non-library cataloging communities. This document is intended for the exclusive use of CC:DA and its cataloging constitutencies, and is presented as a discussion document in the ongoing process of rule revision. Under no circumstances should the information here be copied or re-transmitted without prior consultation with the current Chair of CC:DA.

I do not believe any of the comments here require CC:DA action. They are communicated for information only. The page numbers below refer to the amendment package.

Page 11. In A.9A1, the second example ("Golden guides. Nature") is in the typographer's file, but not printed in the text. Consequently, this example is retained in the 1988 electronic transcription.

Page 13. In 22.22D1 and elsewhere, running head information has not been transcribed into the electronic version, nor have such elements as graphic lines been transcribed. In the event the file is used in a print version, such elements could be easily added.

Page 13. In 23.4C2, the "Darwin (N.T.)" example does not occur twice. Consequently, this example only occurs once in the 1988 electronic transcription.

To give the context of the error, I have given as much of the hierarchy of the entry to identify the error. The suggested correction, however, appears by itself as a single line.

Incorrect reference designation

This category of error is an invalid reference from an index entry to a rule within AACR2. In most cases, the target rule number is a typographic error. Some of these entries are dysfunctional without the correction. Others are frustrating because additional searching is required to follow the reference. The errors affect the usability of both the printed text and the upcoming electronic version.

Measure the height of the binding if the volume is bound. Otherwise, measure the height of the item itself. If the item measures less than 10 centimetres, give the height in millimetres.

An alternative would be to develop two versions of AACR, one for print versions and one for computerized versions. (SGML could accommodate this distinction within a single file, using the appropriate terms depending upon the format that was being used.)

References to physical pages on page xvi and xxi of AACR2 should probably be retained because their context is as part of an historical introduction. References to superfluous page numbers at B.9 and the introduction to the index, however, should be re-worked to permit comfortable use in both printed and online versions.

  I think I would favor retaining the index entry and changing the reference to A.4A, since there may be many people for quite some time who remember this earlier practice or are confused by it when looking at older records.
