CC:DA Activities at ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC

The Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access will meet four times at the 2007 ALA Annual Conference in the New Hampshire Ballroom of the Renaissance M Street, located at 1143 New Hampshire Avenue NW.

On Fri., June 22, 1-5:30 p.m. the Committee will discuss the drafts of Chapters 3, 6, and 7 of Part A of RDA: Resource Description and Access.

On Sat., June 23, 1:30–5:30 p.m., the main agenda item will be the report of the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee, who will report on the April JSC meeting; that item will be followed by the report of the Library of Congress Representative. Later in the afternoon CC:DA will hear reports from two of its task forces and Betty Landesman, ALA Representative to NISO.

On Mon., June 25, 8 -10 a.m., the Committee will hear reports from Donald Chatham, of ALA Publishing Services; Beth Picknally Camden, Chair of the ALCTS Task Force on Non-English Access; Everett Allgood, MARBI representative; and two other task forces. There is time on the agenda for the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee to report on additional issues not covered on Saturday.

On Mon., June 25, 1:30-3:30 p.m., the main agenda item is the continuation of RDA discussions by the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee.

RDA: Resource Description and Access Open Forum at the ALA Annual Conference

The Resource Description and Access (RDA) Update Forum will be held at the Washington Convention Center (WCC) room 206 on Saturday, June 23, from 4:00-5:30 pm. Sponsored by the ALCTS Cataloging and Classification Section, the Forum will provide a brief update on the status of RDA and a chance for you to ask your questions about RDA.

Speakers:

  • Beacher Wiggins, Library of Congress representative to the Committee of Principals (the governance group for AACR2 and RDA)
  • Marjorie Bloss, RDA Project Manager
  • John Attig, ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA
  • Diane Hillmann, CC:DA Liaison for Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI)

RDA: Resource Description and Access revised draft of Chapters 6 and 7 available for comment

The Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA (JSC) is pleased to announce that a revised draft of RDA part A, chapters 6 and 7 has been made available for comment. lease see the following Web page for the draft and details on making comments: http://www.rda-jsc.org/rdadraftch6-7.html

In addition, a revised version of the RDA Prospectus has been prepared, and is available at: Prospectus for RDA

The deadline for comments to the JSC is September 17, 2007, to allow time for the comments to be compiled for consideration by the JSC at their meeting on October 2007. Comments on the draft from within the United States should be submitted to the ALA/ALCTS/CCS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) through any CC:DA member or liaison. Or you use this comment form. The deadline for submission of these comments is August 8, 2007, in order to allow them to be incorporated into the ALA response by September 17.

The period for public comment on Chapters 6 and 7 is now closed.



Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR Meets in Ottawa, Canada, 16-20 April 2007

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR met in Ottawa, Canada, from Monday April 16 to Friday April 20, 2007. The Committee of Principals for AACR also met in Ottawa, and there was a joint meeting with the JSC to review progress on the development of RDA. A report of the outcomes of the meeting and a draft agenda are available on the JSC website. A report from the ALA Representative to the JSC is available on this site.




Data Model Meeting, London, April 30-May 1, 2007

Representatives from the RDA, Dublin Core and IEEE Learning Objects Model communities met at the British Library on April 30-May 1, 2007, to consider the metadata models used by each community. The result of this meeting was a recommendation to work jointly to develop

  • an RDA Element Vocabulary;
  • an RDA Application Profile based on the FRBR and FRAD models;
  • formal vocabularies for the values of various RDA elements.
