CC:DA Activities at ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio

The major business of the CC:DA meetings in San Antonio will be the draft of Part I of RDA, which was just distributed for comment by the Joint Steering Committee (see below). On Friday, January 20, at 10:30 AM, there will be an open discussion of the draft. At the CC:DA meeting on Saturday, January 21, Jennifer Bowen, the ALA Representative to the JSC will report on the October JSC meeting; she will describe the background and context in which the draft was developed, as well as the decisions that the JSC has made about the content of Part I. Jennifer and Barbara Tillett, the Library of Congress Representative to the JSC, will also participate in an Open Forum on RDA on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM. Finally, a major part of the CC:DA meeting on Monday morning will be devoted to a discussion of the draft. In addition to the discussion of RDA, the Saturday afternoon meeting will include reports from the Library of Congress representative, Barbara Tillett, and from CC:DA Task Forces on Rules for Technical Description of Digital Media, on the ALCTS publication “Differences Between, Changes Within,” and on the revision of “Cataloging Microform Sets.” Other business at the Monday morning meetings will include reports from ALA’s NISO representative, Betty Landesman, and from the MARBI Representative, Everett Allgood; an update from Don Chatham, from ALA Publishing Services; and reports from Task Forces on planning a program on Cataloging Cultural Objects and on the draft Functional Requirerements for Authority Records.

Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR Meets in London

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, chaired by Sally Strutt (British Library), met in London, England, October 10-14, 2005. The Committee made decisions regarding the content of Part I of the new cataloguing code, Resource Description and Access (RDA). An executive summary and a report of the outcomes of the meeting are available on the JSC website.

RDA: Resource Description and Access Part 1 draft available for comment

RDA: Resource Description and Access is being developed as a new standard for resource description and access designed for the digital world, to be published in 2008.

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, which is responsible for developing RDA, has issued a draft of Part I of RDA for comment. Part I covers the rules for resource description.

At the same time, the Joint Steering Committee has issued a number of other documents which provide background and context for the draft of Part I. The JSC urges those reviewing the draft of Part I to consult these documents first.

• Strategic Plan for RDA 2005-2008 describes the goals for the development of RDA and the strategies for achieving those goals.
• Prospectus for RDA describes the approach being taken in RDA as a whole, and includes a draft outline of the chapters in RDA and sample text illustrating the style and layout of RDA.
• Objectives and Principles states the objectives and principles for the design of RDA, as well as the functionality of records produced using RDA.
• Frequently Asked Questions provides answers to many questions relating to the content of RDA, its relationship to other standards, and the process for its development.

Comments on the draft from within the United States should be submitted to the ALA/ALCTS/CCS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA). To make comments, please use this comment form. The deadline for submission of comments is February 7, 2006.

CC:DA will be discussing the draft during its meetings at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio.

RDA: Resource Description and Access Open Forum at ALA Midwinter in San Antonio

You are cordially invited to the Resource Description and Access (RDA) Update Forum at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

This open question and answer session about Resource Description and Access (RDA) is sponsored by the ALCTS Cataloging and Classification Section, and it will be held in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Theater on Saturday, January 21, 2006, from 4 to 6 P.M.

Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the successor to AACR2. It is a progressive set of content rules that will soon have a profound effect on cataloging and metadata practices in libraries and other information organizations.

Jennifer Bowen, ALA’s representative to the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) will provide an update on progress of the work on Resource Description and Access (RDA). She and and Barbara Tillett, the Library of Congress’s representative to the JSC will respond to questions from members of the audience.
