CC:DA Activities at ALA Annual Conference in Orlando

CC:DA will hold two meetings in Orlando. The Saturday afternoon meeting will feature two important reports.

• Matthew Beacom, the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee, will report on JSC plans for a new edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules.
• Dr. Barbara B. Tillett will give a presentation on the IFLA meetings of International Cataloguing Experts on an International Cataloguing Code, which took place in Frankfurt in July 2003 and which produced a draft Statement of International Cataloging Principles. Dr. Tillett’s presentation is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM; the CC:DA agenda contains links to the handouts for her presentation and to the draft statement.

The Saturday meeting will also include reports from the Chair, from the Library of Congress Representative, Dr. Tillett, and from ALA Publishing by Donald E. Chatham, and from the ALCTS/ACRL Task Force on Cataloging Rules for Early Printed Monographs.

The Monday morning CC:DA meeting will include reports from several Task Forces:

• CC:DA/MARBI Program Planning Committee for 2004 Preconference. See below for more information about the Preconference.
• The Task Force on Consistency across Part 1 of AACR will present a brief report. The Task Force is working on rules for physical description for the new edition of AACR. A proposal is due at the end of August. The Task Force will meet on Friday afternoon during the conference.
• The Task Force on Specific Material Designations will present its final report. The Task Force will meet on Sunday evening during the conference.

The meeting will also include discussion of new rule revision proposals from the Map and Geography Round Table (MAGERT), and reports from the MARBI representative (Everett Allgood), from the CC:DA Webmaster (John Attig), and from the ALA NISO Representative (Betty Landesman).

CC:DA Sponsors Preconference on FRBR at 2004 ALA Annual Conference

CC:DA and MARBI are sponsoring a preconference at the ALA Annual Conference, June 24-25, 2004, entitled “Back to the Future: Understanding the Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records Model (FRBR) and its Impact on Users, OPACS, and Knowledge Organization.” This one and a half day pre-conference will demonstrate how FRBR will influence the future development of information standards within the library community, and acquaint technical services and IT professionals with the implications of the FRBR model for cataloging rules, MARC formats and other emerging standards for electronic technologies. A more complete description, including a list of the papers, is available.

Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR Meets in Ottawa, Canada

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, chaired by Matthew Beacom, met in Ottawa, Canada, April 19-22, 2004. The major focus for the meeting was preparation for the new edition of AACR. An announcement of the meeting, with the agenda, is available on the JSC Web site.

New Task Forces Appointed

Since the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Diego, four new CC:DA Task Forces have been appointed.

The Task Force to Investigate CC:DA’s Web Presence was charged to investigate how the CC:DA Website is used for internal and external communication, to develop a statement of functional requirements for the site, and to recommend means for carrying out the duties currently undertaken by the CC:DA Webmaster.

The Task Force to Maintain the CC:DA Publication “Differences Between, Changes Within” was charged to maintain the publication, which was just published by ALCTS, keeping it in conformance with the current version of AACR. The Task Force is expected to present reports at each Annual and Midwinter meeting.

The Task Force on the Review of ISBD(ER), 2004 Revision was charged to prepare a review of this document, available at http://www.ifla.org/VII/s13/guide/isbder04.htm.

The Joint ALCTS/ACRL Task Force on Cataloging Rules for Early Printed Monographs was jointly formed by CC:DA and the ACRL Rare Book and Manuscripts Section’s Bibliographic Standards Committee (BSC). The Task Force was charged to investigate the use of the rules for early printed monographs in chapter 2 of AACR2. Specifically, the Task Force was asked to make recommendations on whether rules 2.12-18 are needed in AACR and, if so, what the scope of those rules should be, whether the rules should conform to either Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books (DCRB) or the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Older Monographic Publications (ISBDI(A)), and what principles should inform such rules. The Task Force’s final report is due in July 2004.
