Post-Conference Report on CC:DA Activities at ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Diego

CC:DA held two meetings in San Diego. The Saturday afternoon meeting featured reports from the Chair, from the Library of Congress Representative, Barbara Tillett, and from ALA Publishing by Donald E. Chatham. The ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee, Matthew Beacom, reported on the September 2003 meeting of JSC in Brisbane, Australia. His report included the content of the 2004 amendments to AACR, progress on revisions for the new edition of AACR, and plans for the April 2004 JSC meeting in Ottawa, Canada.

The Saturday meeting also included

• approval of a revised proposal on the definition of “Coloured illustration”;
• discussion of a paper on the rules for early printed monographs [AACR rules 2.12-2.18]; CC:DA decided to appoint a Task Force to discuss the future of these rules; and
• discussions on the latest proposals relating to FRBR terminology in AACR.

The Monday morning CC:DA meeting will include reports from several Task Forces:

• CC:DA/MARBI Program Planning Committee for 2004 Preconference on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records.
• The Task Force on Rule 21.0D presented the final report of its investigation of the use of relator terms in headings. The report is available on the CC:DA Web site. CC:DA approved the revisions to the rule recommended in the appendix to the report.
• The Task Force on Consistency across Part 1 of AACR presented proposals for revisions to the rules for Area 7 (Notes), as well as revised proposals for Areas 2 (Edition), 3 (Material-Specific Details), 4 (Publication, etc.) and 6 (Series). The documents from this Task Force are available on the CC:DA Web site. CC:DA approved the proposals for areas 2, 3, 4 and 6; the proposals for area 7 were discussed, but were not yet finished. CC:DA also approved a prototype of the revised Part 1, which was requested by the Joint Steering Committee and which incorporates the Task Force’s work to date.

The meeting also included discussion of several new rule revision proposals:

• A revised proposal on the rules for capitalization of German in Appendix A was approved.

• A revised proposal concerning a Turkish word in the list of Initial Articles (Appendix E) was approved.

The Monday meeting also included reports from the MARBI representative (Everett Allgood), from the CC:DA Webmaster (John Attig), and from the ALA NISO Representative (Betty Landesman); discussions on CC:DA’s Web presence and Web publications, changes to the CCS Policy on CC:DA Liaisons, and the review of CC:DA by the CCS Policy and Research Committee. Finally, Sara Shatford Layne reported from the ALCTS Metadata Enrichment Task Force.

Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR Meets in Ottawa, Canada

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, chaired by Matthew Beacom, met in Ottawa, Canada, April 19-22, 2004. The major focus for the meeting was preparation for the new edition of AACR. An announcement of the meeting, with the agenda, is available on the JSC Web site.

Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR Meets in Brisbane, Australia

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, chaired by Ann Huthwaite, met in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, September 8-10, 2003. The meeting discussed a wide variety of issues, most of them relating to a planned new edition of AACR. Topics included the introduction of terminology from Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records into AACR2; continuing work on identifying and collocating expressions; proposals to promote consistency across chapters in Part I and to move general rules to Chapter 1; and a variety of other specific proposals. New Task Forces Appointed

Since the ALA Annual Conference in Toronto, three new CC:DA Task Forces have been appointed.

The Task Force on Specific Material Designations (SMDs) has been charged to write a background paper on SMDs. This Task Force was formed at the request of the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, in order to provide the background for a continued discussion of the SMD. The paper will focus on the principles, purposes, and structures of the SMDs, the relation of SMD terms to natural language (terms in common use), and the relation of the SMDs to other parts of the description. The Task Force will meet on Sunday evening during ALA Midwinter, and is expected to have a preliminary document before the JSC meeting in April 2004 and a final document at the ALA Annual Conference.

The Task Force for the Review of “Guidelines for OPAC Displays” was formed in response to the invitation from the IFLA Cataloguing Section to participate in the world-wide review of this document. Comments are due by February 13, 2004.

The Task Force for the Review of “Guidance on the Structure, Content, and Application of Metadata Records for Digital Resources and Collections” was formed in response to the invitation from the IFLA Cataloguing Section to participate in the world-wide review of this document. Comments are due by February 16, 2004.

The Task Force for the Review of ISBD(G), 2003 revision was formed in response to the invitation from the IFLA Cataloguing Section to participate in the world-wide review of this document. Comments are due by February 16, 2004.

Since the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Diego, three new CC:DA Task Forces have been appointed.

The Task Force to Investigate CC:DA’s Web Presence was charged to investigate how the CC:DA Website is used for internal and external communication, to develop a statement of functional requirements for the site, and to recommend means for carrying out the duties currently undertaken by the CC:DA Webmaster.

The Task Force to Maintain the CC:DA Publication “Differences Between, Changes Within” was charged to maintain the publication, keeping it in conformance with the current version of AACR. The Task Force is expected to present reports at each Annual and Midwinter meeting.
