CC:DA Activities at ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco

CC:DA held two meetings in San Francisco. The Saturday afternoon meeting featured the report of the ALA Representative to the Joint Steering Committee, Brian Schottlaender, who reported on the April 2001 meeting of JSC in Washington, DC. In addition, the Saturday agenda included:

• The report of the Library of Congress Representative
• A presentation entitled “Digital Geospatial Data from User’ Perspective” by Larry Carver, Head of the Map and Imagery Laboratory, Davidson Library, University of California, Santa Barbara
• Discussion of the latest compilation of rule change proposals for cartographic materials
• An interim report from the Task Force on ONIX International
• A report on the proposed revisions to ISBD(M)

The Monday morning CC:DA meeting included reports from the following Task Forces:

• ISO Harmonization: This Task Force has been charged to examine the conformity of AACR2 to various ISO standards, including the use of ISO symbols for metric units and the presentation of dates. The Task Force met during the conference gave a brief progress report at the Monday CC:DA meeting.
• Uniform Resource Identifiers and AACR2: This Task Force was formed after discussion at Midwinter and charged to examine the role of resource identifiers and how AACR2 might include provision for them in the rules for bibliographic description. The Task Force met during the conference and gave a brief progress report at the Monday CC:DA meeting.
• Review of ISBD(CR): This Task Force was recently formed to prepare comments as part of the world-wide review of the draft International Standard Bibliographic Description for Serials and Other Continuing Resources. The Task Force prepared its report, which waw discussed at the Monday CC:DA meeting.
• Appendix on Major Changes: The latest draft of the Appendix on Major Changes: When to Create a New Record had been reviewed by the Joint Steering Committee. At the Monday meeting, CC:DA considered how to proceed in the light of the responses.
• Specific Characteristics of Electronic Resources: The preliminary recommendations of this Task Force had been reviewed by the Joint Steering Committee and CC:DA considered the proposals in the light of the JSC responses, as well as two responses from Mary Larsgaard and from the MAGERT Representative to CC:DA.
• The Rule of Three: This Task Force was formed to review documents on the rule which limits statements of responsibility and access points to three names. The Task Force reviewed the document prepared by the Australian Committee on Cataloguing and the responses from other JSC members, and prepared a report for CC:DA.
• Review of Revisions to Chapter 12 of AACR: This Task Force has continued to review the proposals for revision of Chapter 12 and related rules, and gave a brief report at the Monday CC:DA meeting.

The meeting concluded with reports from the MARBI Representative, Mark Watson, and from the CC:DA Webmaster, John Attig; and with a discussion of a proposed timetable for proposals to CC:DA.

Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR Meeting in Washington, DC

The Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, chaired by Ann Huthwaite, held a meeting in Washington, DC, 2-4 April 2001. Major agenda items included revisions to Chapters 3 (cartographic materials) and 12 (serials and integrating resources) of AACR. A report of the outcomes of this meeting is available on the JSC Web site.

New Task Forces Appointed

Five new CC:DA Task Forces have been appointed.

The Task Force on ONIX International has been charged to review an important emerging metadata standard for electronic books. The Task Force will present its final report at the 2002 Midwinter Meeting.

The Task Force on the Rule of Three has been charged to review proposals currently before the Joint Steering Committee to make the “rule of three” optional in AACR2, thus allowing catalogers more flexibility in recording names of responsible persons and bodies, and in providing access to those names. The Task Force presented its report at the 2001 Annual Conference.

The Task Force on Uniform Resource Identifiers and AACR2 has been charged to examine resource identifiers for electronic resources, to consider the role of such identifiers in bibliographic description and access, and to recommend how the rules for description in AACR2 should deal with them. The final report of the Task Force is expected to be considered at the 2002 Midwinter Meeting.

The Task Force on the Review of ISBD(CR) was formed to prepare comments as part of the worldwide review of the draft International Standard Bibliographic Description for Serials and Other Continuing Resources. The report of the Task Force was considered during the ALA Annual Conference.

The Task Force on Alpha Prototype of Reorganized Part One was formed to review a prototype of how Part I of AACR2 might be reorganized according to ISBD areas. The Joint Steering Committee has asked for responses before its October 2001 meeting, and the Task Force has been asked to work quickly and present its recommendations to CC:DA by the end of August.

Library of Congress Conference on “Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium: Confronting the Challenges of Networked Resources and the Web”

The Library of Congress hosted a 2 1/2-day invitational conference on “Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium: Confronting the Challenges of Networked Resources and the Web.” The home page for the conference can be found at http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/bibcontrol/. The site now includes extensive sets of recommendations from the topical discussion groups at the conference, and an draft action plan. The Library of Congress is actively seeking comments on this plan.

1999 Amendments to AACR2 Available as Free Download on ALA’s Web site

CHICAGO—July 27, 2000—The Canadian Library Association, the Library Association and the American Library Association will offer a free, PDF version of the 1999 amendments to Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, 1998 revision, on ALA’ Web site. The Adobe Acrobat PDF file can be downloaded at www.ala.org/editions/updates/aacr2. The Amendments 1999 are also available online in the ALA Store http://www.alastore.ala.org.

The Amendments 1999 were agreed to by the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSC) at its Toronto meeting in October 1997 and its Leeds meeting in November 1998. They were approved for publication at the Brisbane meeting of the JSC in October 1999.
