Committee on Cataloging: Description & Access
1997 Midwinter Meeting Washington, DC
Action List
- The Chair, Joan Swanekamp, reported that the ALCTS Task Force on Metadata has proposed a series of metadata workshops and is seeking CC:DA assistance. A number of CC:DA members indicated an interest in participating in the planning process and their names were forwarded to Jennifer Younger, Task Force Chair.
- Laurel Jizba reported on comments that she had received regarding the Guidelines for the Bibliographic Description of Interactive Multimedia. It was noted that parts of the Guidelines are in need of updating, but because of the upcoming International Conference it was agreed that the revision should be postponed. The Chair will notify ALA Editions that if additional copies of the Guidelines are to be printed, the number printed should be kept to a minimum.
- The Task Force on Document Distribution provided an interim report on their work. The Task Force will follow-up with the ALCTS Office regarding the CC:DA Web page. Their work also pointed to the need to revise CC:DA Procedures.
- CC:DA reviewed a number of issues scheduled for discussion at MARBI. Of particular interest to CC:DA was MARBI Proposal No. 97-3 -- Redefinition of Code "m" (computer file) in Leader/06 in the USMARC Bibliographic Format. On this issue that centers around the concept of content or container, CC:DA felt that they could not support the proposal at this time. Since is this is one of the topics scheduled for discussion at the International Conference in the fall, any effort by MARBI to revise the MARC format now was considered to be premature.
CC:DA will meet jointly with MARBI at its Monday Annual Meeting.
- CC:DA was unable to reach a consensus of the report of the Task Force on Works Intended for Performance. It was agreed that the report should be posted on the CC:DA Web and that the CC:DA Chair would work with the Task Force Chair to solicit the feedback necessary to develop rule revisions.
- CC:DA received a final report from the Task Force on Cataloging Conference Proceedings. CC:DA supported the proposal to remove "prominently named" from the rules and agreed to appoint a new task force to address the concern about what constitutes a named conference; a new Chair will be named. The Task Force was thanked for all of its work.
- CC:DA met with representatives of ALA Editions regarding the upcoming publication of an electronic version of AACR2R. Members noted concern for the planned distribution format and the lack of availability of the SGML formatted version to third-party developers. Several also expressed dissatisfaction with the announced pricing structure. Another report will also be provided and the annual meeting.
- CC:DA voted to approve the list of initial articles revised by Glenn Patton in response to 3JSC/ALA/29.
- Sherry Kelley, Chair of the CC:DA Task Force on the TEI reported for the Task Force. The Task Force membership will be extended and the charge broadened.
- CC:DA agreed to the new definitions outlined in the proposal CC:DA/Glossary/1 with amendments. On the issue of the GMD [electronic resource]
(CC:DA/GMD/1),
CC:DA agreed to the appointment of a task force to address the issue.
- The representative to the Joint Steering Committee will forward to JSC: 3JSC/ALA/11, revisions to 3JSC/ALA/29rev. and the proposals for conference headings. Brian Schottlaender reported details of the upcoming International Conference. He noted that he very recently received some new JSC documents that will be distributed following the meeting.
