CC:DA/A/Action Summary/1995 June
Committee on Cataloging: Description & Access
1995 Annual Conference Chicago, IL
Summary of Actions Taken
- Heard a report from the Chair indicating that five ANSI/NISO documents were received for CC:DA consideration and votes. Task Forces were formed to address Z39.74 and Z39.32, the Chair voted to Abstain on Z39.57, the Chair voted Yes on the proposal to establish a new NISO committee, and the deadline was missed on Z39.64 while awaiting a response from CC:AAM.
- Discussed a proposal to form a task force to investigate the cataloging of videorecordings that include musical elements. Decided to form two task forces: one to examine the existing rules on music moving image materials, identify the problems which lead to the existing confusion, and suggest appropriate changes to AACR2; and one to prepare a position paper for JSC consideration regarding the larger issue of works intended for performance.
- Heard a report from the JSC Representative. Approved the Music Library Association response on key and mode in music uniform titles. Referred the questions regarding cross references for legal documents to the American Association of Law Librarians for their comments. Thanked the JSC Representative for her years of exemplary service.
- Heard a report from the Chair of the Task Forces to Review Proposed NISO Standards Z39.74 and Z39.32. In both cases, the task forces recommended voting Yes, with comments.
- Heard the report of the Task Force on Communication and Outreach. Voted to accept the revised CC:DA pamphlet, which will be sent to CCS with the "How to submit a rule change proposal" document for appropriate distribution. Voted to accept the Task Force's final report, and discharge the Task Force with thanks.
- Discussed the position paper on the TEI header.
Voted to form a task force on the relationship between the TEI header and the cataloging rules.
- Heard the report of the Task Force on a Forum on Natural History Cataloging Issues. Discussed whether this task force should be transferred to CCS because of the proposed scope of the forum. Decided to postpone a decision on this issue.
- Heard a report on the meeting of the ISBD(CF) Review Group.
- Heard the report of the IFLA Representative.
- Heard the report of the Task Force on the Cataloging of Conference Proceedings. Revised the Task Force's charge by extending their time limit by one year (to 1997).
- Heard the report of the MARBI Representative.
- Heard the report of the Library of Congress Representative.
- Heard the Chair report that, after consultation with the American Indian Library Association, no changes need to be made to IFLA's Names of Persons for American Indian names.
- Discussed the packet of AACR2 errors found during the conversion of AACR2 to SGML form. Decided that no action needed to be taken at this time, but that the new JSC Representative will consult with the new CC:DA Chair to decide what action CC:DA should take in the near future.
- Discussed questions and problems regarding the dissemination of CC:DA documents. Decided to form a task force to draft a recommendation to ALCTS on possible changes to the ALCTS Policies and Procedures Manual to address these problems.
- Discussed some concerns regarding the alleged intent of ALA Publishing to publish the electronic version of AACR2 on its own. Concluded that this was not CC:DA's concern.
